By Carolyn McDonald

There are many types of therapy developed over the years to deal with a number of different issues affecting people with hard to treat conduct. One approach generally accepted as an effective method of treating a number of different issues is dialectical behavior therapy in NYC. This is a cognitive behavioral approach, which puts emphasis on psychological aspects in treatment. It was developed by, Marsha M. Linehan, a psychologist. It was designed to treat all borderline personality disorders. Today it is the main treatment used in dealing with different types of mental disorders around New York City.

The operating theory is that, individuals often have different reactions to the same situations. It has put its emphasis on those who tend to overreact intensely to emotional triggers similar to those commonly found I relationships with loved ones. They usually have a higher arousal level in these situations compared to an average person. They are able to get more stimulation that is emotional and often require more time to return to a normal baseline level.

Those suffering from such personality conduct have extreme mood swings. They experience higher levels of emotions compared to the normal person. They are misunderstood. They spend a better part of their childhood trying to conform to normal behavior acceptable to loved ones and peers. They often suffered in silence and grew up without the necessary skills to cope with the outside world.

The therapy teaches many skills that help victims learn how to cope with emotional surges commonly experienced. It is the main approach used to handle such cases and has been identified as effective in cases like substance abuse, depression, eating disorders and other types of stress. It utilizes two main aspects that oppose one another. These include acceptance and change. Therapists must accept the nature of client but realize that change is needed.

The therapy teaches four main skills. Mindfulness helps them be fully aware and stay present in their present moment. Distress tolerance allows them accept and tolerate pain that they are feeling and not change. Interpersonal effectiveness allows them to be able to ask for what they desire and learn how to say no in a way that maintains relationships with others. Emotional regulation shows them how to change those emotions that they want to change.

Therapists are empowered with skills to target certain problems that they have identified in their sessions. This hierarchy system aims at identifying and dealing with serious issues first before slowly addressing the rest. They immediately deal with any suicidal incidents and behavior identified. Other important issues addressed are those, which tend to affect sessions. These include failure to attend, coming late or lack of contribution.

Behaviors that affect quality of life are identified. This category consists of issues like relationships, financial situations, housing crises or even mental disorders. Acquisition of skills refers to learning of new skills in a bid to replace ineffective deeds.

Research done has continuously proved the effectiveness of dialectical behavior therapy. It helps patients cope with their disorder. These include substance abuse, anger, psychiatric hospitalization, abuse of substances and having suicidal habits. If followed correctly, it can be effective and highly efficient.
