There are several causes of a home that is not level, the most common one being a lot of moisture present below the house. With time, the moisture can lead to the ground to soften, leading to the blocks located below it to either shift or sink. When the house is under construction, failing to properly level or block it is another common contributor of the problem. Hence, caution should be taken during construction to avoid making the house in a manner that will make it tilt later on.

Sometimes the house becoming unlevel can be caused by failure to put enough blocks beneath the frame. To illustrate this, consider a long piece of wood balanced between a stone block at each end. If someone was to walk across the wood on top of it, it would sag as they approach the center, since there is no stone to support it at the center. This type of sagging would also take place in a mobile house.

Even houses that rest on footings or concrete platforms, or those that have been levelled using concrete blocks still have to be levelled with time. For just about any structure, shifting is a natural process, especially if one lives in a cold climate whereby the ground is subjected to the thawing and freezing process. Over time, the ground will be caused to heave, leading to concrete platforms that are cracked and a house that is unlevel.
