The Process Of Chimney Cleaning

By Maryanne Goff

Chimney cleaning is a must for those people who use firewood in their houses during the cold season as a way of warming it up. This is because; constant emission of smoke through this point creates a lot of soot as it leaves. This accumulation can block the whole place and even attract harmful animals to stay in it and this is quite risky.

The owners of the house can decide on carrying out this process on their own. The other option is hiring people who specialize in this kind of tasks at a given fee. This later option is a bit expensive and most people prefer performing this exercise on their own as long as the necessary tools and other requirements are available.

In this perspective, the needed necessities are flashlight, protection gear, brushes or cloth rags attached on a pole and some cleaning liquids. All these must be present before commencement of this task. They assist highly for protection purposes and simplifying the task at hand. The gear comes in terms of masks and gloves for safeguarding the head and hands respectively. Once everything is available, he or she will be ready to begin.

Two methods of cleaning have been proposed for use. They are top to bottom and bottom to top. Although, emphasis has been placed on the former one since the person carrying out this process will not have the debris falling on his clothing during the exercise. With protective clothes and gear put on, any method can be used as per the wishes of the owner.

Putting some coverings on the fire place whether they are old rugs or newspapers is the first process. This is for accumulation of the soot and tar when scrubbing the walls clean. While on the roof top, he or she inserts the brushes into the chimney and pushes them against the wall up and down repeatedly up to a point when all the dirt has been removed.

For the bottom to top, one needs to situate him or herself in the fire place and carry out the above mentioned procedure only that this time round it is from below to the peak. As he or she does this, the soot and tar will fall on his or her body thus; total covering and wearing of protective gear is an excellent safety measure.

When there are no more accumulations on these sidelines, all the gathered dirt within the fireplace is disposed off. This process can be done using water and other cleaning agents for a sparkling clean vent although; the dry method is still effective. Another way is the use of vacuum machine, it works best too.

The biggest question as to when chimney cleaning should be conducted still lingers on the minds of many. The best answer for this is regularly as long as the use of firewood is eminent. Actually, there is no exact time frame for them to wait. It has to be a frequent exercise.
