Basic Facts Regarding Wooden Windows

By David Gordon

The transparent or translucent opening within a wall or door is known as a window. This structure allows light to pass through and, if not closed or sealed, air and sound. There are several kinds available. Wooden windows are typically used as replacement windows, which are applied when existing units are deteriorated, non-functional or drafty.

These units play a big role in exterior and interior design schemes. When people are looking to make home improvements, they usually choose to replace these structures. The replacement process, especially when done on older property, is known to decrease energy loss and outside noise pollution.

Glass blocks, vinyl, fiberglass and many other composite products are usually used as replacements. Although the most common materials for this are PVC and wood. There are different kinds of wood applied, for example: aluminum-clad and vinyl-clad woods. Replacements are expected to increase energy efficiency and even boost resale value. They are meant to adjust to various installment techniques and situation, for example: full frame, new models, window sashes only.

Each of the different kinds offers its own set of features that may be beneficial on some properties and not on others. Vinyl fabric is considered an ideal material and yet many property owners are going for more traditional styles, such as wood. There are a lot of styles to select from and so it is recommended that owners get professional advice before making a final choice.

Wood versions have been around since the early half of the 1900s and are still used in present times. During the 1960s there was the emergence of steel and aluminum casements, which led to the fall of wood as a mainstay. Nonetheless, wood is still quite common in the northern area of America. Vinyl styles were not present until the 1970s.

Double glazing refers to an eco-friendly process that is common in modern times. The process is where a window is made with two pieces of glass pane. There is a space left between the pains that measure several millimeters. Air that is trapped between the glasses creates a layer of insulation. Although this style is popular and preferred, it cannot be repaired if it was done incorrectly. Instead, the entire unit must be replaced. This glazing is known to reduce noise pollution, internal condensation and stop the amount of heat loss.

Hung sash or sash windows are units made with one or many movable panels that are used to form the frame that holds the glass. Narrow muntins are used to separate each of the panes. Muntins, which may also be referred to as glazing bars, are constructed from strips of wood or metal.

Windows and their available treatments, can cost a lot. Fortunately, there are programs sponsored by utility companies and the government that offer low-interest loans and grants so that owners can replace old units with energy-efficient styles. Updating these structures is not done for function, just as much as it is for style. Although replacement or new units can be costly, the money that is put into them is typically offset by the many benefits they offer. Wooden windows have been around since the early twentieth century and are still used today, particularly as replacement windows.
