Summer Home Improvement Projects Include Painting

By Jerry Flaugherty

When summer brings warmer and drier weather many homeowner's thoughts turn to outdoor home improvement. One of the tasks that can improve curb appeal while protecting the wood of the house is painting. Renting equipment to help complete the task quickly and provide a great professional look when it is done.

Exterior surfaces often collect dust and dirt from the street. Over time, most paint will begin to peel. Although it is possible to complete the cleaning and scraping, renting a pressure washer can take a lot of time and work away from the job. This machine connects to an ordinary garden hose, but increases the pressure to blast away loose paint and dirt. The house will need to dry several days before applying paint.

Painting a house, especially one that is more than a single story can require extension ladders to reach the height gable ends. Even though you may have step ladders, they often do not provide the height needed for these areas. Even the pros sometimes need to rent ladders to reach such heights.

Scaffolding offers a larger reach at heights than a ladder by itself. The walk board is much more comfortable on the soles of the feet. Since the user does not need to climb up and down the ladder as much, the job is easier and the time to complete the task is reduced. The walk board can also be adjusted to place the worker at the optimal height.

A masking gun applies both masking tape and paper at the same time. It is an ideal tool for use with a paint sprayer as it can quickly mask windows and fixtures to prevent overspray. A paint shield can also be used with the sprayer to prevent overspray onto other surfaces without taping.

Paint sprayers are useful at reducing the work involved in painting. The units can quickly apply many gallons of paint. They work best when paint is placed in a five gallon bucket; however, they can be used with single gallons. The rental facility staff can provide basic instructions for use of the machine.

Most of these painting tools are not used by homeowners often enough to warrant buying them. Renting makes a better choice and does not clutter a garage with tools that are seldom used. Make sure to know how to safely use each piece of equipment before leaving the rental center to start a home improvement job.
