What Are Hurricane Protection For Windows

By Andrea Davidson

If you are living in a hurricane prone area, one of the most important things for your home is hurricane protection for windows. Hurricane shutters are the most economical solutions for most homeowners to ensure that they still have a livable home after the storm passes since doors and windows are the weakest places in your house. Once the window breaks, the wind blows inside and wreck the interior.

Other than bringing havoc into your home, it can apply upward pressure which can send the roof flying. When this happens, it is possible that your walls will collapse next and everything inside the house will fly along with the storm. Rather than waiting for the storm to approach before acquiring materials, which might be too late by then, buy your tools and materials early.

There are many materials used to protect windows and the most common is plywood. It is the most popular choice since it is the cheapest and if they are installed properly they can be just as good as the highest quality shutters. Though it has its disadvantages since it is very bulky and heavy and finding a place to store it can be a problem.

Roll down shutters, Bahama awning, storm panels, and accordion shutter is some of the favorite protectors used. Storm panels are the cheapest among them though it requires space to store it and it requires manual attachment when in use. They are mostly made of furrowed steel or aluminum, which is fitted to the tracks around the pane.

They are removable so it does not change the look of the house and they are strong and provide excellent protection. Though they can be difficult to handle and usually require more than one person to handle it. Sometimes they do not line up properly and have sharp edges, which can injure you.

Accordion shutters open and close on the tracks found at the bottom and top of the pane and are usually made of aluminum. They are the more costly than panel, yet they are also handier since it can be easily closed and locked. Since they are affixed to the window, they will not require any space to store and is easily readied by one person when a tempest comes.

Some models can be locked with a key and are great as thief deterrent. However, they can look bulky and out of place on some houses, which is a reason some people do not want them installed. They also have the potential to break easily than other types since they glide on wheels.

Bahama awnings are single piece louvered shutters which are directly attached to the top of the pane and can be locked on the wall. They can also be opened to provide a shade and closed to provide privacy when there is no storm. Roll downs are those that are stored in on the top of the window and are rolled down to protect it.

They are among the most expensive alternatives, but it is also the most convenient. Homeowners should make sure that the products they buy has been tested and meets the city codes. The installer should also have a permit to ensure that the hurricane protection for windows are installed properly.
