Details About Detroit Animal Control

By Roxanne Cruz

Within the streets of Detroit, there are many stray dogs which roam freely without any care. This fact has led to the increase in number of dog attack reports which are filed by residents in the area. Individuals living in the city find it very menacing that they have to deal with homeless animals when they are governed by a working local council. It is the duty of Detroit animal control agencies to ensure that all free roaming dogs are removed from the streets.

The city of Detroit has about twenty three animal control officers who are expected to rescue strays and provide them with adequate shelter. This number of officers is quite small considering the numerous homeless animals and the size of this town. Therefore, a great percentage of rescued strays in the town are euthanized since there are only few dogs who are adopted.

Controlling the number of stray animals in a town does not just involve picking and sheltering. First, the public should be made aware of the mounting stray dog problem and be taught about the various rescue alternatives which are considered humane. Some of the humane policies employed in rescue operations include foster care, pet population control through neutering, no-kill sheltering and pet identification.

The ratio of available control officers to that of strays is so unbalanced in this city. This makes it very difficult for the officers to cater for the needs of all dogs that they capture. Therefore, the number of homeless dogs that are euthanized is high due to the fact that the facilities available for their caring are very limited.

Killing of homeless or stray dogs is never the answer to controlling their numbers. The public should be sensitized on the various ways of dealing with the swelling number of strays in their towns. Policies employed in the process of population control include no-kill sheltering, foster care and pet identification. All these methods are effective in reducing the population of stray animals.

During the process of rehabilitating stray animals, officers perform a number of tests. These tests are meant to prove that the animal, if it is a dog, is safe to live with human beings. Some of the tests performed include temperament tests and aggression tests. Only those dogs that pass well in their tests are declared fit to live around humans and therefore they are passed out for adoption.

Enough funds should be set aside for fighting the resurgence in numbers of stray dogs in this city. Instead of just depending on the funds trickling from the central government, residents can come together and contribute the little they have towards this worthy cause. The problem of this city should be handled by all residents as if it is their personal problem.

All animals have the right to live just like any other living organism on this planet. However, it the streets are never safe when there are dogs and other types of violent animals roaming around. Children are especially the most affected lot when it comes to the issue of stray and homeless dogs. Institutions such the Detroit animal control ensure that children are kept safe while they play outside on the streets.
