Bad Effects Of Nuclear Energy

By Laura Brown

One of the advantages of nuclear operations is energy production. It is also said to be a safer process for generation of electricity. You must have heard about different kinds of controversies on the nuclear energy. If you do, then you must know a lot of things about different disasters such as the one in Fukushima, Chernobyl and Three Mile Island. These events have only proven that the negative effects of nuclear energy are threatening to different lives and the environment.

Meltdowns

One of the most disastrous, controversial and scariest scenario that could happen to a city or town that has a nuclear power plant is a meltdown. Though energy production in other forms and production plants can pose the same risks, the radiation that came out after a meltdown can contaminate the affected area for decades. Long-term hazards may exist on the particular areas and even on the neighboring regions.

The case of meltdowns occur if the process suddenly came out of the nuclear power plant operator's control and the heat can't be carried out of the core due to unavailability of a coolant. Even though the operation for fission reaction has been stopped, the meltdown can continue due to split uranium particles that resumes the production of radiation. This would result to a lot casualties and it will also take decades for the area to recover from the horrible incident.

Issues on Nuclear Waste

Compared to meltdowns which may happen with low probability, nuclear waste is a sure thing to take place and to have a negative impact to people and the environment. In day to day operation of a nuclear power plant, the reactor produces some amounts of by products that can be extremely dangerous. The problem starts with handling, transporting and storage. It is important for these wastes to be stored in a secure, well-fenced and remote place but it is very hard to find suitable locations.

There are many methods that are being taught on how to reuse spent fuel rods but the government is not empowering this due to security risks and other concerns. Each nuclear power plants in the United States have been keeping the radioactive wastes on their own site. Humans can develop cancer and genetic deformities if they have been exposed to a big amount of radiation. Because of this, there are proposals to just bury the toxic wastes underground but it is still not being considered yet.
