Learning About Tennis Court Maintenance

By Debra Cooley

Tennis court maintenance does not have to be difficult or confusing. The steps that are required will depend on which type you have. There are different materials these courts are made from. Each one requires different steps for properly maintaining them. It is important to know these differences to avoid damage and keep the courts in the best shape possible for the people that play on them.

Hard wooden materials make up one of the types of courts you may have. These courts are generally simple to maintain, unless they have become damaged. The goal is to prevent damage to the wood through proper care. Dirt and other things should be removed often using a push broom. You can wash the surface with a cleaner designed for wooden courts and a mop. Acrylic coating should be reapplied as it becomes dull.

The lines of the wooden courts should also be redone, usually when the acrylic is reapplied. You should ban all type of marking soles that can gouge or scratch the surface. Additionally, all equipment and supplies should be removed from the surface when you are finished using them because they can result in an uneven surface from the added weight.

Another type is made from a clay material. To maintain these courts, they will need to be raked frequently and you should begin by wetting the surface. Raking loosens the clay and helps level it out by removing large clumps. This is an important part of ensuring that there are no obstacles to trip up players or affect the game.

Another part of leveling involves using a drag brush following the raking. If there is anything that has gotten stuck on the painted lines, a line scrub brush can be used to get it off. Finally, the clay surface is rolled to smash it down and create a smooth surface without ruts or abnormal areas.

You may also come across some grass courts. These courts will either be synthetic or natural. Most people try to avoid using natural grass because the care is quite involved. The courts must be reseeded often to prevent bald patches and keep the surface as even as possible. It is important to make sure there are not any dips in the grass.

It must also be watered, cut, and fertilized often to keep it growing and looking good. You may also need to treat the grass with weed and pest preventatives. Lines must be repainted after each cutting because when the grass grows and is cut, the painted lines are also cut.

In contrast, synthetic versions are becoming a popular option. They look and feel just like real grass, but they are less difficult to care for. In most cases, weed growth and pest invasions do not occur and will not require treatment. It is also rare for these types to need fertilizing or constant watering.

Although proper tennis court maintenance is important, it is vital to learn about the type you have in order to care for it correctly. When you are properly educated, your efforts will be much easier. If you choose to pay for a service to provide the maintenance, you should know what they are doing to care for your surface and ensure they are doing it right.
