The Earthships Have Landed In Canada: 14+ In Beautiful British Columbia

By Jose Anahim

The Earthship is the embodiment of sustainable style, design and construction. These highly sustainable buildings can also be constructed in any part of our planet, and still provide electricity, potable water, contained waste product treatment and sustainable food production. This may well become the model 'home' over the next fifteen to thirty years' time.

THE PRINCIPLES OF AFFORDABLE, 'GREEN' DESIGN:

Building with Recycled & Natural Materials

* Solar and Wind Electricity

* Solar/Thermal Heating and Cooling

* Water Harvesting

* Contained Sewage Treatment

* Interior & Exterior Food Production

THE EARTHSHIP MODEL

Earthships are the creation of New Mexico-based architect Michael Reynolds, founding father of Earthship Biotecture, who characterizes these distinctive homes as a "radically sustainable" technique of home building. This profoundly green, low-tech type of building originated in New Mexico, and makes in-depth use of earth-packed tires for building blocks, in conjunction with varied alternative varieties of refuse and natural materials.

The Earthship technique incorporates an estimated 45% recycled materials; alongside plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, wood, natural plaster and stone, as well as metal from laundry machines and fridges, while generally depending on the sun for heat.

EARTHSHIPS IN BEAUTIFUL BRITISH COLUMBIA

In British Columbia, there are more or less fourteen Earthships, with new ones turning out systematically. These are situated in Brittany Lake in the Chilcotin, Darfield, Nanaimo, Lone Butte, Lasqueti Island (2), Silver Star access road close to Vernon, Creston (2), Barnhartvale, and Old Joseph Campbell Creek Road close to Kamloops (2). In addition, there are presently two Comox Valley projects under review with the Comox Valley Regional District, for brand new builds in each Fanny Bay and Merville.

This type of construction is finding its way into our universal conscientiousness not just for our homes, but also for our community centres, Eco Villages, commercial uses, and many more special use properties.
